The Society for the Study of Japonisme has held the annual Society for the Study of Japonisme International Symposium since 2019, previously held as the Hatakeyama Symposium from 2011 until 2018. The Organizing Committee welcomes proposals from members for the theme of the upcoming 2023 symposium to be held as the following:

The program and the abstracts for papers will be uploaded on the Society’s homepage and will also be published in the 2023 issue of Studies in Japonisme (no. 43). Presenters are also encouraged to submit an expanded version of their presentation for the peer-reviewed Studies in Japonisme, and if accepted for publication, are expected to acknowledge that the paper was originally presented at the 2023 Society for the Study of Japonisme International Symposium, co-organized with the Ebara Hatakeyama Memorial Foundation.

Call for Themes for the Society for the Study of Japonisme International Symposium 2023
We hereby make a call for themes for the Society for the Study of Japonisme International Symposium 2023. Please send your name and the summary of your proposed theme for the symposium (max. 150 words) as an e-mail attachment to the email address specified below. Please also find the list of past symposia for your reference. The Organizing Committee will select the theme, and the Board of Directors will approve the selection in June. If your proposal is selected, you may be asked to assist the planning and execution of the symposium itself. Please note that all communication within and between the Committee and the Board will be held in Japanese only.
Proposal submission is limited to the regular and the student members of the Society for the Study of Japonisme. Non-member must become a Society member at the time of one’s proposal submission for the proposal to be considered. All membership must be approved by the Board of Directors.
