'The Society for the Study of Japonisme Award' was established in 1980 to encourage broader research into Japonisme, reach a wide audience and to honour the outstanding achievements of Society members. Since then, many researchers have been recognized as awardees of the prize. Furthermore, 'The Society for the Study of Japonisme Young Researcher’s Award' was established in 2013 to support and encourage the activities of young researchers holding promising visions for future research. Moreover, 'The Society for the Study of Japonisme Exhibition Award' was created to celebrate notable exhibitions on Japonisme with special focus on cultural exchanges between Japan and other nations. In the last few years, it has become customary to conduct the award ceremony of 'The Society for the Study of Japonisme Award' and 'The Society for the Study of Japonisme Young Researcher’s Award' in the autumn and to hold commemorative lectures by the winners in the spring.
