The Society for the Study of Japonisme Award was established in 1980 to promote research on Japonisme that reaches a wide audience, and to honour the outstanding achievements of Society members. The Society for the Study of Japonisme Young Researcher’s Award was established in 2013 to support and encourage the activities of young researchers holding promising visions for future research.
The Society for the Study of Japonisme Exhibition Award, which was created to celebrate notable exhibitions on Japonisme, ended in 2019.
The dates of the award ceremony and of the commemorative lectures by the winners will be announced on this homepage.

Nomination Guidelines for the 45th Society for the Study of Japonisme Award & the 12nd Society for the Study of Japonisme Young Researcher’s Award

The Society for the Study of Japonisme Award was established in 1980 to promote research on Japonisme that reaches a wide audience, and to honour the outstanding achievements of Society members. The Society for the Study of Japonisme Young Researcher’s Award was established in 2013 to support and encourage the activities of young researchers holding promising visions for future research.

Nomination Criteria for the Society for the Study of Japonisme Award
Research output by members and student members of the society (excluding the members of the executive committee in charge of the awards) who have contributed to the research on Japonisme through the following achievements.

Nomination Criteria for the Society for the Study of Japonisme Emerging Research Award
Research output by members and student members of the society (excluding the members of the executive committee in charge of the awards) who are considered as early-career researchers whose achievements hint at promising future research activities.

  1. Eligibility

Books, articles, criticisms, translations, exhibitions, digital publications, or dissertations (must be available from public repository) published in Japanese, English or French between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2024. Publications that have been peer-reviewed or edited/proofread by a third party are preferred.

  1. Nomination process

Members and student members can nominate themselves or are nominated by other members by filling out the necessary information in the designated recommendation letter form, sign (or stamp) the document, add a copy of the nominated publication (or the actual copy), and mail it to the Society Secretariat by the deadline of May 31st. We only accept one nomination per recommender per each award category. You can download the recommendation letter form from the Society’s homepage or request it from the Society Secretariat. One cannot nominate the same work two years in a row. The award nominees and nominating members must both be either a member or a student member of the Society.

  2. Selection process

The selection committees of the Japonisme Society Award and the Young Researcher’s award will consider the nominated works. The Board of Directors will make the final decision.

  1. Announcement of results

Award winners will be selected in mid-October. The selection will be notified on the Society’s homepage and the Newsletter. We ask the winners to give a special lecture about their work. The dates for the awards ceremony and the lecture will be notified on the Society’s homepage.

  1. Award prizes

Japonisme Society Award: Prize certificate・Monetary award of 100.000 yen
Young Researcher’s Award: Prize certificate・Monetary award of 50.000 yen
